Oh gosh. Life is getting busy busy busy, and it's only the end of FEBRUARY. There's just too much that I want to do, and not enough time....
Okay I'm reorganizing my post, so it's not so rambly.
I'm currently very conflicted about a convention at the moment: JAFAX. (
www.jafax.org)
I have been a part of their artist's alley for 7ish years now, and it was my very first convention I was in artist's alley.
Things that I like that they do:
- An art review. You have to send in art. This seems like a no brainer.
- They assign tables. HOORAY no rush for the gates like stampeding animals.
This year they've made some changes that...well...I'm not very keen on.
- To be in the alley you must donate one (1) piece of art.
- According to rules and comments in forum...the art must be an original, unique piece. It can't be something you're already selling at your table. They really want to have it be themed to the convention's theme too, but that they're not picky on.
- Also, from what I can understand, the art will be sold in an auction as a fundraiser for the club. (Okay, my problem with this is, really, who's gonna buy a pic related to the theme...). They also don't specify this in the rules explicity - they have an addendum at the bottom:
"Submitted artwork becomes the EXCLUSIVE property of JAFAX; JAFAX can use submitted artwork for any purpose. We plan to use some artwork for promotional purposes, and most of the artwork will be sold at a silent Art Auction during the event, as a fundraiser."
Okay. I can understand this. It's normal for conventions. BUT if you're going to use it for promotional items....wouldn't you want it themed for NEXT year's theme?? Having that year's theme at the very start of the convention...kinda last minute if they'd want it for that.
Truthfully, JAFAX needs a mascot or two, but that's a whole other can of beans.
- If you want a full sized (8') table, you must pay an extra $50. LOLWHUT?! JAFAX is a convention that draws maybe 1500 people max, and is only two days. That's almost as much as a base table at ANIME CENTRAL (10,000 people +, 3 Days long) costs. I can understand that they need to fundraise more. Don't let it fall on vendors and artists only. That's not fair.
Essentially, it comes down to a matter of principle, and I'm really considering not going this year. I wanted to have that money for cosplay later this year, but I may just scrimp and save from other cons to do it. I'll see.
What I don't think is fair is that they are holding us, as artists, to a much MUCH higher standard than the rest of their convention. They don't have any sort of inkling of a guest list, panel ideas, really...um...ANYTHING that makes it sound like it'd be worth going to. Yet they're treating us as though our AA is for a major convention.
WHUT??
